You don't have to know any RFCs for CCIE!? I've talked to quite a few CCIEs
who don't even know how TCP works. Afterall it's just payload in a packet

Major in what sense? A great deal depends on the topic at hand. IP vs
TCP/UDP, vs MPLS, vs addressing, etc.
I personally use the RFC Editor pages' search function and get creative with
keywords:

I keep a private-list like this as well. I like to group them by functional
importance to my line of work... e.g. NOC/Contact-related, IP/ASN-related,
I like this one--
