Mine (Whale pump) has a 3 way valve, and was used 99.99% of the time for bilge.

Dean,
That would depend on where the Y connection is located — If it is after the
vented loop, then you should be all right. Otherwise whatever gets pumped out
of one pump will likely flow back through the other one.
If you are going to put the Y closer to the pumps, you should install check
A dedicated discharge would be best but not necessary. Joining the two
pump discharges would be okay.
However, if your existing pump is a centrifugal (non-positive displacement
like an impeller or diaphragm) pump, you'll need a check valve to prevent
the water from flowing through the old pump.
On my C 34, I have a non-automatic bilge pump in the well next to the mast
holder. It’s old and back flows about gallon (maybe an exaggeration!) of water
back into the bilge once it shuts off. I’m replacing it and expect I can just
attach the new bilge pump to the existing outflow piping. My
