Chuck,
I have used MAX Props since the mid 80’s including multiple Hawaii crossings.
(Full disclosure, I have known Frederic Laffitte one of PYI’s owners since
before PYI was a company and have sailed over 20K offshore miles with him.)
I echo the comments regarding PYI’s recommendations,
Here is an update on my MAX prop. I took it to PYI, the estimate came back
needing the following parts, blades, hub, and all gears. Basically I will
keep my original housing and get a "new" prop out of the deal for 2/3 the
cost of a new prop. I should have it back by the middle of next week.

PYI has a spec for blade tightness. When it needs manufactured PYI has a
program for that which will cost you roughly 1/3 the cost of an new
max-prop.

I have a 3 blade Maxprop as well. It has worked well in forward and reverse.
Has anyone figured out a way to check its feathering action? I presume it is
feathering when sailing, but don’t know how to tell. The only thing I can
think of would be to sail to the mooring and then dive.
We went from 3 blade fixed to 3 blade max prop a couple of years ago. Huge
difference sailing as expected and I think it backs and fills better than with
the fixed prop. I am considering pitching it slightly heavier on the next haul
out this winter based on info on this fantastic forum.
Hey guys I fixed the subject line
I too have a Max-Prop and am fond of it though I have little experience
with alternatives. I service mine every year by replacing the zinc and
greasing it per the manufacturer's instructions.

There is another C 37/40 in the yard with a Max prop. No play at all in
that prop.

The shaft taper does not seem to be an issue.I placed the spinner housing
on the shaft without the key and with the key. The position of the housing
doesn't change at all.
The shaft key as you can see in the video is captured wholly within the
body of the prop "spinner"
When you speek of "play" are you referring to wiggle between the blades,

When I grab on blade and hold it still and then attempt to rotate either of
the other 2 blades they will rotate +or- ~1/16th of an inch. I've checked

I'm about to deliver a boat that had a max prop installed with the wrong key on
the shaft, which caused problems.

There was alot of slop/play and I removed it and sent it back to the
manufacturer. It was refurbished, then returned to me. The local yard, a
Max Prop approved installer assisted in the reinstallation. At the time I

Propeller Make: “J” Prop, Marine Propeller s.r.l
Propeller Size:
Double check the size. I think mine is a 16" and I thought it was at 24°.
I also suggest getting a laser tach from Amazon. The Yanmar tachs are
notorious for being about 200 rpm slow. Mine was.
It sounds like you already know that the pitch can only be changed in 2°
increments and for every 2°
Give the people at PYI a shout with all the details: engine, reduction
gearing, and your boat specs. They will be able to get you far closer on

Hi All,
Here are the results of my Max Prop issues.
I have a CC 35 Mk II with a Volvo Penta 2003 28hp with a 2.4:1 reduction MS2B
transmission max RPM is 3200. The prop is a left rotation. The Max Prop is 14”
and set to 24 deg (X=C, Y=E). This gives 11.6” pitch. The original settings

Bill,
Couple thoughts:
If you are getting a max of 3000 rpm you already have too much pitch. I
would not go up; I might go down one click.
You should cruise at 80% of max rpm or 2500-2600 rpm.
I have a 35/3 with a max-prop set to 14 degrees, but my reduction gear is
2.6:1 I get to 3500 rpm
Be careful over pitching it cause continuously running the engine below 80%
of full load can cause other problems such as coking up the exhaust elbow
and glazing the cylinders. Lots of people like the idea of over pitching
the prop to run a little faster at a lower rpm. I say, the difference in
Oh and resetting the pitch means another haul (more money). Live with it
at least till next season's haul.
