I'm not sure what Plan B is at this point, that's double what I have heard
from others who have done the switch from rod to wire.

Edson elkhide spreader boots are available at West Marine for about $70 per

on my lower spreaders (where there is contact with the headsail) are elk hide.

I would regard that as a bargain. I think the guys at Blackline are pretty
good, but expensive.

I just did the rigging on Peregrine. The riggers were able to re-head all but
the V2/D3, which had to be replaced because of aligning the top spreaders with
the bend in the rod. The cost was about $5k for literally the best guys in the
world to do it all.

I'm having a rigger come out next week to have a look at our standing
rigging and mast, it's all original so I'm sure we'll end up with yet
another horrific bill. I'm seriously considering going to wire instead of
rod, but I'll get quotes on both
Andrew, you're right, I want to pull the mast so I
Especially if you intend to pull the rig, Jim, sewing elkhide boots on is
remarkably easy. I did that last year with mine and even though I though I made
a hash of the job, you wouldn't know it from the deck! Mind you, I did start
with the top set of spreaders first. It's a quick enough job
Does anyone know offhand the sizes of the spreader tips on the early rig
(pre-1985)? I want to put on some spreader boots and having them ready to
go would make it much easier than having to go up and measure first.
