2013-04-23 Thread Jason Beason
While running this morning I heard a singing Fox Sparrow along the Stewart Ditch trail at the edge of town. I went back with camera and it had moved uphill but I was able to get a video in which you can hear it singing. I listened to recording on Xeno Canto and I think the song most closely

2013-04-23 Thread KevyGudGuy
Hello Fellow Birders, Saw my first warbler of the season this morning. A male Yellow-rump (Myrtle) was inspecting cracks and crevices in a chokecherry tree in my little townhome yard. Stayed only a minute or two after I spotted him. It looks like Winter out there, but Spring's a

[cobirds] Painted Redstart, wherefore art thou?

2013-04-23 Thread Joe Roller
Imagine my shock when upon a second and more careful reading of the nice report from Rebecca Brackett, I happened to notice that this great sighting occurred on Saturday, April 20th. The best way for this to work out will be if we can get more detailed directions to the place the bird was seen.

[cobirds] Post office drive, Franktown, Douglas

2013-04-23 Thread Hugh Kingery
Our 7-mile drive to and from the Post office this morning, just after the snow stopped, produced even more birds species than the snowy drive on April 17. Today we counted 774 birds of 59 species. Standouts: A closely packed scrum of Northern Shovelers and Wilson's Phalaropes busily

[cobirds] Rocky Mountain Arsenal - Adams County

2013-04-23 Thread JBreitsch - Denver
I spent an hour and a half driving/walking through the arsenal this afternoon. Mostly it was walking on the west side of Lake Ladora. There was a total of 55 species, with a good variety of water fowl and sparrows. Highlights include (in the order seen, so this will be fairly random):

[cobirds] Firestone Gravel Pits and Union Res (Weld County)

2013-04-23 Thread Cathy Sheeter
I planned to make a quick stop at the Firestone gravel pits, but there were so many birds about that I ended up there for about an hour and a half. The second Red-Necked Grebe was back on the pond today! It has been missing since the 17th (only one has been seen on several stops by there).

[cobirds] Bent and Prowers Counties, 4/23/13

2013-04-23 Thread Duane Nelson
Birders, Persistent snow fell for much of the day in SE Colorado, but for the most part melted as soon as it fell. As a result, a number of migrant birds made landfall. Normally, I stick to reporting things that I think might force people to consider a trip to SE Colorado, but I'll

[cobirds] Eagle County Painted Redstart

2013-04-23 Thread Tom Kay McConnell
Vic Zerbi just called to say he did not find the Painted Redstart in Eagle. He says that Rebecca Brackett is knowledgeable about birds and is certain that there was indeed a Painted Redstart that visited over the weekend. He searched the location on Haystacker Drive at Eagle Ranch and could

In addition to the Broad-winged Hawk and imm Harris's Sparrow (btw, I was told they stay through April and some into May, at least in northern Colo, before returning north), there were more unusual or first of the year birds in Canon City. I saw the Green Heron again yesterday but not today.
