This morning I went birding along the South Platte Mary Carter Greenway, my
patch, and at the Northern Wildlife area I found a female Cassin's Finch
with a large mixed group of House Finches, American Tree Sparrows and a
Song Sparrow. I have not yet found a Cassin's in this area over the years

The plumage and vocalizations of this bird have been discussed on Advanced
Birding Facebook Page and consensus is that it is a Long-billed Dowitcher,
which is also much more likely given the date and location. The bird was
reported at the same location this morning.

John Vanderpoel called me to say that he had just (about 10:30 a.m. on 11/23)
had a Varied Thrush in Nunn, Weld County, at a park at Lincoln and 4th. Might
have flown north a bit.

Those are sheaths on new feathers growing in. A Junco should have finished
its Fall molt by October, so I'm guessing this bird lost a bunch of head
feathers at one time (accident, close call w/ an accipiter, whatever) and
is now growing them back.
