While birding Union Reservoir that was largely devoid of birds yesterday,
we happened on a corvid foraging in some pine trees. Our first impression
was crow-sized but with binoculars we could see a raven tail, bill and
chough. The bill and chough were not quite up to what we expect Common

early December thanks to the high winds last night and today. Birds are
starting to pour in: 100 Common Merganser, 50 Common Goldeneye, 4 Bufflehead,

Wednesday afternoon there were 3 Short-eared Owls on Weld County Road 7 a
couple miles north of Mead. They were flying low and perching on posts and
on the ground on both sides of the road near the top of the ridge north of
Weld County Road 38. A couple of Ferruginous Hawks and groups of
Longmont Christmas Bird Count had a preliminary total of 92 species(a
couple of areas had not reported in yet). One species was found for the first
time: A Eastern Phoebe in St. Vrain Park in south central Longmont. Other
unusual species were Hermit Thrush, Horned Grebes, Winter Wren, Am. W
We saw a Dunlin on the NE side of Union reservoir in Weld County, east of
Longmont, Saturday about noon. Probably the same as reported at Jim Hamm
pond by Joel and Marcel Such earlier this week. There were still 2 immature
Black-crowned Night-herons on the SW lobe of Pelican pond at St Vrain

2 Blackpoll warblers, 1 male and 1 female, were on the east side of Jim's Pond
at jim Hamm nature area on 17th st and Boulder/Weld county line road east of
Longmont Sunday morning. Quite a few other migrants, nothing very rare, were
