[cobirds] Jaw Dropping Gull Movement - Arapahoe

2021-02-22 Thread jared.d...@gmail.com
Most years, many, many gulls head west-east at dawn and east-west at dusk over University & Arapahoe (approximately) in Centennial. This year, the movements are astounding. At dusk this evening, thousands and thousands of gulls -- mostly Ring-bills I'm sure but perhaps some Herrings and others

[cobirds] Black-capped Chickadee Territorial Behavior & Great Horned feathers - Arapahoe

2021-01-15 Thread jared.d...@gmail.com
I believe it was Wednesday that I started hearing Black-capped Chickadees start up their well-known, two note songs around Centennial (Arapahoe). I also noted them seeming increasingly intolerant of others in both my yard and in neighborhood trees. A lot of active chasing going on right now.

[cobirds] Lesser Goldfinch + Rabbitbrush - Arapahoe

2020-12-02 Thread jared.d...@gmail.com
Haven't birded much and have mostly been watching my Centennial (Arapahoe Co.) yard. A trio of Lesser Goldfinches have been regular over the past week or so. It's largely because I hung a thistle feeder this year. (I don't usually.) But I've also seen the birds visiting the Green Rabbitbrush

Dave's post reminded me of an excellent book on this -- Bernd Heinrich's *Winter World: The Ingenuity of Animal Survival*. The book is largely written about northeastern species, but briefly addresses our poorwill's torpor. Heinrich makes a star of Maine's Golden-crowned Kinglets in the book.

I was fortunate to meet Joe back in 2015ish, when he took an interest in birds I was reporting around Cheesman Park in Denver. Ever the county lister, he was and remained. I think it was a Red Crossbill flock that drew him north to Cheesman from the Wash Park area. I was glad to meet him, for

[cobirds] Swainson's Hawk Kettle - Arapahoe

2020-09-26 Thread jared.d...@gmail.com
I've never seen more than a family of Swainson's Hawks at a time, so I was surprised to encounter a dozen+ Swainson's Hawks over Holly Park in Centennial (Arapahoe County) this morning. From a distance, I took them for Turkey Vultures, the only raptors I see riding thermals in flocks locally.

To add to this: yesterday evening, I had a *Western Wood-Pewee* in my backyard and walked out my front door to a *Rock Wren*. This was just my second encounter with the latter in my yard. - Jared Del Rosso Centennial, CO On Monday, August 31, 2020 at 2:49:57 PM UTC-6 jared.d...@gmail.com

[cobirds] Centennial Birds (Arapahoe)

An earlyish *Green-tailed Towhee* in my Centennial yard this morning, along with a yard first *Eastern Kingbird*. I don't come upon the latter all that often in Centennial, so this was a real treat. A flock of a dozen Cedar Waxwing swung through this afternoon. A *Mountain Chickadee* first

[cobirds] C. Nighthawk Anomalies? (Arapahoe)

2020-08-20 Thread jared.d...@gmail.com
I've had almost nightly sightings of nighthawks, including of flocks between 25-40 birds in the Centennial / Greenwood Village area since August 2. Last night, I had two birds fly north over my yard around 6:50 PM, a flock of 29 come back south over the yard about 10 minutes later, 22 return

This summer, some local birders and I attempted to document non-migratory nighthawks in west Centennial (Arapahoe County). Why? Because. (Because I heart this bird, because eBird doesn't contain many late-June through mid-July reports of the bird in west Centennial, because this bird's
