My REDHAT 7.2 machine uses the stock pop3 and imapd /etc/pam.d/ files as
created via the rpm without a hitch.
Which means they are of the following form (you didn't list this
configuration as a tested method):
auth requiredpam_nologin.so
auth requiredpam_stack.so service=
