I have on many occasions scanned film accidentally with the emulsion side
incorrectly placed. Never had a problem that simply flipping the image in
editing software could not fix. This issue seems like a storm in a teacup.

Hi Patrick,
Thanks for your help.

Odd. I sent the message below over three and a half hours ago but I've
still not seen it back in my mailbox. Is this list moderated or does
the send not see their own message?
Trying again to see what happens.

Tony.

In theory, at least, the white balance should be set for the actual light
source alone, rather than the light source through the unexposed film, while
My speed increase is substantial with opencl. My guess is that your gpu is on
the slower side of the performance curve.

Exactly! Thanks for pointing it out.

Thanks for all of you for your invaluable contribution to the journey I
started with film scanning. Using your input I now finally settled with a
minimum number of steps that gives me an acceptable start for a complete
film roll using the exact same steps for each slide. So here is my approach:

I've not used DT for while and now when I try to run it I get asked if
I want to upgrade the database, but this fails.
Running DT from a terminal, I get the following messages:
$ darktable
[init] can't rename i to images
[init] error in view empty_film_rolls: no such table: main.images
[init]
Most likely you've hit this bug:
https://github.com/darktable-org/darktable/issues/5903
Just open preferences when not in fullscreen mode.

Thank you Patrick, I think now it is actually a bug in the interface.
When I click the little downward arrow next to the option it does not
do anything (it should open the dropdown selection of possible
options). But I just found out that if I position the mouse pointer
where it says

Under Windows this file

Ah, sorry, you thought bit deeper.
The film will not act as a typical lens-mounted filter (like
softeners) as it is too close to the object plane.
But lets consider this: if your film layer would be opaque you'd see a
difference between having it on the illumination side or on the lens
Thank you very much Jim, your suggestion was very helpful. The
figures without and with opencl are 17.470 and 15.871 sec,
respectively, corresponding to an opencl-related improvement in
performance of around 9%. I have to say I am a bit underwhelmed by
the benefits of opencl (or by the graphic
Hi,
the influence may be negligible. In an ideal world, the film between
lens and layer would not alter the image.
Our world is real.
YMMV.

Hi,
in my Mac Os X binary installation of Darktable 3.2.1 via the dmg file

Colin, Istvan,
Got it solved by implementing Istvan’s solution (*) by combining it with
Colin’s solution (°). Without Colin’s solution the base curve continued to
appear. I have now the filmic and exposure modules appearing as a result of
the scene-referred setting (*).
Thanks all,

Giuseppe,
You could try the benchmarks described here.
https://math.dartmouth.edu/~sarunas/darktable_bench.html
A bit old now, but should still work.

Hi,
I have just installed the latest 3.2.1 version on a 13" MacBook Pro
(latest model) with an Intel Iris Plus Graphics 1536 GPU. I don't
really see much of an increase in speed when I activate the OpenCL
support. Is this the way it is supposed to be? Could you suggest a
way to test it more
I don't quite get this. We are taking a picture of a fully backlit
transparent object. My understanding is that all the film layers act as a
filter for the light. So all layers will be equally involved regardless
which one is in the front.
Anyway I did some research:
Hi,
Now, that I found out, that the latest Nikon
firmware update allows D850 and other models to
use Wlan without Snapbridge, I was wondering if
there is a way to have darktable use this
directly.
Thanks,
