The answer is that I had been looking at the *original* version of
darktablerc. The *user* version indicated the correct number.
Locations of both Windows and Linux versions have been noted for future
reference.

One further comment: For new users not having 'recursive' as a basis for
importing may well lead to substantial thrashing. I do understand why
one may wish to change the value but the default should, in my view, be
recursive.

Thank you Patrick ... you are always a fountain of knowledge. I am
surprised that such a basic item is located differently in the various
versions.

I'm not saying that I'm trying to change the levels shown. I am saying
that when I open darktable, the preferences show 3 levels as previously
noted, yet darktablerc shows 1 level. No changes have been made in
preferences or in darktablerc since 3.4.0 came out on 12/24/20. Just
sayin'.
OK! That 'splains that! I was unaware of there being two versions of
darktablerc. Thank you for the clarity, Remco!
On Windows machines, the global version is located in C:\Program
Files\darktable\share\darktable, while the local version is located in

Even more interesting! I'm on Windows 10 (2 machines), with levels set
to "3" in preferences, yet darktablerc still shows levels set to "1".
I'm using the general release of darktable 3.4.0, not a daily compilation.

This seems to be the entry in darktable.rc that effects the height of the
relevant box. Either it is a new preference or somehow or other in my case
it got reset to some minimal value.

Interesting! On my machines, I still can get to the setting for folder
levels under [Preferences / lighttable / number of folders to show in
lists] where it is set to 3.
Yet, if I look in darktablerc, I see . It appears that Preferences
overrides darktablerc. True or false?

After a rebuild I am finding that I am not seeing multiple folder levels
at 'collect images' ... as I remember there is a switch to set the
number of levels but I do not remember where it is or was. .. Will
somebody please jog my old memory.
