In the same way you will want to change collection manager. The only way to
do that without loss is to use xmp/iptc tagging inside the files (jpeg) or
with sidecar files (raw). So there is no problem to use DT for collection
management.

Absolutely, darktable is great.
I use "rapid photo downloader" to get photos and videos from my canon 1 dx
separated to the correct folders. Then import my raws into Darktable to
edit. I then use Darktable to manage my raw folder collections, moving,
deleting, rating, applying colour labels and key

You could use DT clones to keep old edits.

dt is meant to be a digital asset management system for the full
workflow - and I am happy about that.
