It sounds like what we need to happen here is to fine-tune a DBMail configuration on a private LAN (somewhat easy to do, if you have spare hardware) and pound it with all sorts of traffic, tuning as necessary. Apart from real-world use, this is the only way we're going to break beyond the hypo
