I noticed this by chance, so I did some testing to find why the same
command produces two different outputs (note that I ran the commands one
after the other, as root, in the same session).
If you find the "apt autoremove --purge" command in the sequence of the
commands I have indicated,

I saw in #604918 that /etc/profile is deliberately not treated as a
conffile. Is there any way to get the new version installed on package
upgrade, other than an external configuration management system such
as Ansible?
The way /etc/profile is handled changed slightly in version 6.10,
