I also see this and I didn't know upstream was dead, it always seemed
like a useful project. It appears that downstream is dead as well
(Grave bug around three weeks, no response.).

I see this too in current squeeze, so it *is* reproducible. At first I
was tempted to kill X because it was consuming so much CPU, but after a
minute or so, it settled down.

I agree with Ron - I have Gnome on my box as well as wmaker, and it's
only in wmaker that I see the (annoying) broken behaviour. Hence it's
reasonable to assume that this is a wmaker bug - I hope the maintainer
has an opinion on the matter.
