Got more info. It's a bug in the alsa plugin. It just happens when using
dmix. Dmix allows to play several channels with a one-channel sound card
without using esound nor artsd.

surely, I've never touched it.
Is it possible that a package on which udev doesn't depend is causing
the failure? My last dist-upgrade involved 400+ packages.
