Same problem here. My strace also shows that opening /etc/nsswitch.conf was the
last before segfault. The package is completely useless. The only thing I can
still run is tripwire --help, but any tripwire -m operation fails.

The work of both of you is highly valuable to many people around here and it
would really be a pity if the package was removed from Debian. Even a late
package is better than no package. Please reconsider your decision, downgrade
the severity and keep doing the good job you already have done.

I can provide additional information for this bug. I experience it if I
configure
ajaxterm to start in daemon mode with uid root so that ajaxterm uses /bin/login.
in manual section 2.7: wget re-downloads every file when mirroring.
The solution proposed in manual section 2.7 is the use of --backup-converted,
which, as has been shown, does not work.

if you raise FD_SETSIZE in /usr/include/bits/typesizes.h and then
compile a software which uses select(), this software will be able to
handle more than 1024 FDs. Recompiling glibc, the kernel or whatever
else is not necessary.
I tested this solution with UnrealIRCd and 8000 clients.
