I've also tried to build emacs-snapshot on Debian Etch x86, pretty

the 1.2 CUPS Deskjet driver and the Gutenprint 420 drivers and in both

OK, another update and possibly resolution:
My CUPS setup consists of two servers. One runs on my day-to-day
workstation (no printers directly connected) and the other runs on a
print/file/etc server, which is where the Deskjet is connected. Both
are running unstable and CUPS 1.2.2-1.
