This bug is now the top result in a google search for "debian File
Copy.pm" so it would be nice if one entry contained the solution for all
users whose machine is currently in a bad state following a failed
etch->lenny upgrade and are not full fledged apt hackers.

Patch to fix the string splitting, as described in a mail to upstream.
Feel free to forward it.
Compiled and tested on my own machine. Fixes the bug.
Other issues are left (XDM option not sticking), but that's for another day.

The /proc/acpi/alarm interface was obsoleted. The new interface for ACPI
wakeup is /sys/class/rtc/rtcX/wakealarm, but it requires enabling a
kernel config option.
