Try to play around with the Vbe* options in /etc/hibernate/ram.conf
and see if any of those make a difference.
Can you install uswsusp and post the output of s2ram -i ?
Does it work with uswsusp installed?

I did not have i915resolution installed and have seen some success
stories on google with this. It is installed now, I just need to know if
the ram.conf is read when running s2ram -f? If I run hibernate-ram it
will fall
Thanks for that, it makes sense. I setup as suggested with uswsusp
installed and ran hibernate-ram and it suspended without a problem. The
resume still has the black screen. I tried to ctrl-alt-del at this point
with the black screen and it would seem to reboot but the screen did not
start

1. echo -n mem /sys/power/state or activate suspend through gnome power
