Um, why does ld.so pick up /usr/lib/libncurses.so.5 rather than /lib/libncurses.so.5 on your system in the first place? It sounds like you have explicitly added /usr/lib to your search path, either with -rpath or by listing it in ld.so.conf or LD_LIBRARY_PATH, which I would consider to be a config
