I've installed 1.3.1 on a machine at work. It's on a (physical) network
with a bunch of Windows boxes running NT, Win95 and WFW3.x. I've added
TCPIP stacks to one NT machine and one Win95 machine, set IP addresses,
and the two Windows boxes and the Linux box can all ping one another
at will. :-)

I agree that the 3x swap rule makes little sense on high end systems. A
guru friend of mine explained it as "if the kernel needs to swap out
your memory it might have to swap the whole thing so you should plan for
that". He believes you should use 1.5x your RAM on high end sytems ( >=
32 MB). I
I've read some of the Debian policy information, which says that all
manpages should have 'gzip -9' run on them. However, some of the manpages
in my /usr/man directories are not gzipped. Should this be reported as
a bug? In the meantime, what should I do?

I installed the StarOffice 3.1 tarballs on my brand new Debian 1.3.1 system and
I can't get the spell check to work. I changed the line in the sd.sh file that
said:
LANG=us to
LANG=en_US
in case that has anything to do with it
Everything else seem to work fine

The rule of thumb of three times RAM has always seemed highly
illogical to me. A machine with 8 mb probably needs much more than 24
mb, while one with 97 mb probably doesn't need any.

This was covered in the list some time back. If you
ldd /home/ftp/bin/ls
it will tell you what version of libc it is linked against.
elm# ldd ls
libc.so.5 => /lib/libc.so.5 (0x4000a000)
Then ls -l /home/ftp/lib and see if you have the right version.
elm# ll ../bin
