What I can tell you is that the Vortex is a known problematic card under
Windows, certaining the ones I've heard about locally being played with
were a pain - you'll have to get drivers from 3Com for it..

From the size (and names) of the linux-2.0.35.tar.gz and
linux-2.0.36.tar.gz files, it looks like you downloaded the complete
kernel source instead of the patches. Just 'rm linux' to delete the
symlink and 'tar xzf linux-2.0.36.tar.gz' which will untar the archive

are source code (compressed into a tgz).

For security reasons I've switched to MD5_CRYPT + shadow pwd's.
login seems to work fine, but sulogin refused to recognize my root-password
that is much longer than 8 chars.

It is latex, tex, and a bunch of add-ons. They are _the_ way to typeset
documents. Combine this with a decent editor[1] and you'll produce better
documents than MSWord
