Besides the discussion about how to preserve the installed packages state, I
would also backup the file /var/cache/debconf/config.dat which helps to restore
the configuration of the configurable installed packages. But I don't know how
to do it automatically but I think its described in the man pag

I think I've found a/the fix for re-enabling the original behavior of my
transport maps and MX relaying. I added .$mydomain to mydestination in
main.cf. This is in addition to $mydomain which was already in
mydestination.
$mydomain vs. .$mydomain is subtle but apparently important.

sendmail links to exim. Should be no harm
in using exim rather than sendmail.

For the command line there is swish++.
Its worth a try but it requires a configuration file (see
/usr/share/doc/swish++).

sound card. When I try to play a sound file w/ mplayer - I see how the
time digits are changing but hear no sound. I tried to run alsamixer -

It seems that current linux-patch-grsecurity2 don't compatible with stable
