If the mp3s are on a shared folder on the xp box you should be able to
mount that on a debian system with samba and play them from there with
just about any mp3 player

Marc is correct. I had the same problem. With the 2.4 kernel you must
find the correct modules and load them. I never did get ALSA to work

I am trying to use an audio editing/recording program named Audacity.
When I start the program, I an error saying that it failed to
initialise the audio i/o error. I changed the ownership of /dev/dsp to
the user and set permissions to 666. Now if I first run 'killall artsd'
