I may be wrong here, but isn't the command apt-get dist-upgrade? Maybe
you're confusing aptitude upgrade with the apt-get version?

Another list I'm on is *brutal* about that. If you pose a newbie question,
the responses you get (if you're lucky enough to get a response) are either
"RTFM" or "check the archives." This list isn't
out for myself what it's all about.
can someone point me to a doc/faq/tutorial somewhere that gives me the hows
and a well written version of the whys? I've searched all over and haven't
really been able to find much that didn't just tell me to blindly follow the
given steps.
