Changed monitor and am back running X after a dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86.   Problem is the windows are way too big for the 1024 x 780 resolution, and the desktop does not fit into the screen. X is started from GDM If I startx -- -depth 24 as root it’s fine, just how it should be.

Fixed. Off by one error in xserver-xfree86. I'll post a bug presently. My monitor manual says the horizontal refresh is from 27 to 79 kHz, so I used 27 - 80 in XFConfig-4. Now I've got a rock-solid image at 75 Hz. And the monitor hasn't blown up yet. And surprise! the screen went back to

I know how to change screen resolution using ctl-alt-plus or ctl-alt-minus, but the absolute size of the screen doesn't change. Is there a way to change resolution _and_ screen size at the same time? I usually use 1600x1200, but now I'd like to run a linux game fullscreen at 800x600. T

I know this isn't of any help, but I have the same machine - and don't experience the problems you're having - I have full screen in DOS, Win95 and Linux. Although I do wish it support 800x600 resolution instead of 620x480 in 800x600 virtual screen mode. -jay
