Essaye de faire un sudo apt-get update ou sudo aptitude update, souvent
c'est un dépot qui n'est plus joingnable
Passe les commandes dans un terminal pour voir l'erreur, via gnome et
autres les erreurs update managers sont juste foireuses et sans infos

Engraçado, segundo o packages.debian.org, parece que os pacotes
gnome-cups

I think maybe I am unable to do updates right now. Here is the output of each

instalei o update-notifier, mas ainda nao
conseguyi por o icone na barra.

Passei pelo mesmo problema que você. Eu instalava o update-manager, mas
ele nem mencionava ou recomendava o update-notifier. Agora instalando o
update-notifier, tanto o synaptic
