You may find, like I did, that the alsa settings get lost on rebooting. A simple fix that worked for me is... 1. After running alsaconf and confirming that everything works, enter the command alsactl store. 2. In /etc/rc.local, add the command alsactl restore. Nr. 2 shouldn't be

At least a partial clue: alsactl is provided by alsa-utils, still at v 0.5 for me (though I see a newer one has made it to sid). The init script checks for version mismatch between alsa and alsactl, and reports the latter doesn't exist if it's not compatible.
