Hi all,
Debian unstable & testing still carry around libc5, and some associated
packages like altgcc, libdb1, ld.so and a few others.
Is there nowadays still a use for these packages? Does the amount of

libc wasn't useable on linux systems. This was rectified in glibc 2.0,
however the linux libc was up to v5, so glibc is sometimes called libc6.

This is strange. All the libc5 X libraries I'm aware of install in

After upgrading from bo to hamm, xmaple did not work any more (the command

Hi,
obviously it is still possible to run (most) of the old libc5
binaries in hamm. Somehow ld knows when it is necessary to use
the libs from the libc5-compat directory. How does this
mechanism work?
I have a program that segfaults; obviously it tries to use both
libc5 *and* libc6:
$ ldd

Install the altdev packages, and then set your path to include
/usr/i486-linuxlibc1/bin first:
export PATH=/usr/i486-linuxlibc1/bin:$PA
On a Hamm and later system how do I compile against libc5 and its
headers?

Linux, because I'd like to *get there* today
havn't upgraded it on your own...then you are most
probably using debian version 1.3 (AKA "bo")
The current "stable" version is 2.0 (hamm)

Hello,
I installed Debian Linux 2.0.29 and wanted to add support for ppp. I ran
deselect and it refused to install the necessary libc6 library because it was
in conflict with the required libc5 library.
How can I nevertheless install ppp support.
Thank you,
Yves Van de Weyer.
If you want to run E, I recommend moving on up to hamm (or slink).
Otherwise, you have to compile your own version of the following (in
order):
libz
libtiff
libpng
libjpeg
either libgif or libungif
Imlib
Fnlib
Enlightenment
If you want to -- go for it. Frankly give it up and move on to Hamm.

I'm still running the crusty ol' bo (1.3.1) Debian release. I'd like
to install the Enlightenment window manager, but the only .deb package
I can find is libc6-based (and bo is libc5).
I tried installing from scratch, but that just didn't work.
Any hints?
Thanks!

I just down loaded and installed the 2.0 release. I got though the
install and selected the standard package for dselect to install. After
hours of down load time I get the message that perl cant be installed
because of a libc5 conflict and shortly there after I got pages of
similar errors
