I have some further info, which I'll post in case it's helpful to somebody.
I've done some toying with the shortcut keys and I was wrong, all I've tried
fail when NumLock is on, save Run in Terminal. I've tried
* single key shortcuts (such as F1 for help)
* Fn+F10 for ejecting CD's

ok I have this issue as well, here is some lsof usage of the user kim on my
system after logging her off, keep in mind all processes should be killed after
logoff, hopefully this will shed some light...

I can confirm that system sounds are broken in Ubuntu 8.04. I can play

Steps to reproduce the problem:
Plug in a Seagate Free Agent external hard drive (or presumably others as
well)
Do not use the drive for five minutes or so, until it goes into power-saving
mode
Use Nautilus to try to access the drive
To resolve the issue follow this steps:
1. Open the Configuration Editor
2. Expand Desktop
3. Expand gnome
4. Highlight volume_manager
5. Go to the right panel and find out the entry: autoplay_vcd_command
6. and change %m for vcd:///dev/cdrom
