There seems to be some checks for flatpak whilst starting Gimp. The
issue can be solved by installing:
apt install gnome-software-plugin-flatpak
faccessat(AT_FDCWD, "/.flatpak-info", F_OK) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)

Just to add, GIMP does run fine as root (sudo gimp), but crashes on a
normal user.
Same behavior for a new user and a fresh install.

There is an easier way to reproduce this:
1) open gnome-panel properties
2) fast klicking on "Show hide buttons" and "Arrow on hide buttons" to
enable/disable it (more the once) breaks the visual applying

2) connecting to a wireless network
3) add main repository source and update
4) install xchat
5) change workspaces to 4 columns
6) change panel properties "show hide buttons":ON and "arrows on hide
