ripping simply doesn't work for Ubuntu 10.10 or Ubuntu.10.04, only for
LinuxMint 7, 8 and 9 and Ubuntu 9.04, leaving Ubuntu 9.10 to be investigated,
where I suspect that in Ubuntu 'it ain't broke so let's fix it' -

be a lot more

that, after adding sound-juicer and ubuntu-restricted-extras, 'Audio CD
Extractor', aka Sound Juicer's default Quality MP3 profile is now
audio/x-raw-int,rate=44100,channels=2 ! lamemp3enc name=enc target=0 quality=6

mistake being to insert 'vbr=3' instead of just 'vbr=4' in editing the profile,

players to decide what the results are, rather than simply listening to the
results with their chosen player.
Such players and tools produce different, sometimes highly misleading reports,

advise that for Ubuntu and LinuxMint, you also need gstreamer LAME plugins etc
installed, most easily achieved by adding ubuntu-restricted-extras, which I am
in the habit of always doing, if only to get MicroSoft Core

Despite being selected to occur by default under their Brasero 2.30.0, Edit,
plugins, disc finalisation is not followed by actual disc checksum creation
Today's Ubuntu 10.04 Daily Release contains Brasero 2.29.3 which also
doesn't burnproof via Checksum verify.
Pity, Ubuntu 9.04's Brasero 2.26.1 had succeeded in temporarily
replacing Windows-hosted Nero Burning or ImgBurn as THE reliable Disc
Burner on my rigs, so another Linux missed

April 2009, Brasero now works in the i386 desktop version on my [A] rig.
(This post is from the AMD64 desktop version on my [B] rig, where the new 9.04

In Report #216159 I reported that that Kardy kernels -15 and -16 caused
problems for my E2160 with its Zarlink MT352 DBV-T (Aver A777) PCI card
identified as the likely cause, the card being happier with -12 and
perfectly happy with 7.10's kernel.
Now, Release Candidate 8.04 won't even install

Having just successfully applied the latest series of Partial Updates to
my 3.0GHz Northwood rig, tried with my E2160 rig, first with its
second Vista drive connected and then disconnected unless that was the
problem, but no joy, 'Internal error'
After repeated HAL initialisation failures, tried yet another install which
instigated a Partial Update to remove 1 pakage, install 18 new packages and
'update' 491 packages (a few more than previously), which took two hours and
offered a new kernel 2.6.24-16-generic for an incredibly slow
Later on, I tried another re-install on my E2160 rig, which took two hours,
consisted of 509 packages and included new kernel 2.6.24-16-generic, removed
kernel 2.6.24-15-generic and left kernel 2.6.24-12-generic.
Normal re-start into kernel 2.6.24-16-generic after a very slow re-boot,
