Hmm, this now seems to work /almost/ flawlessly for USB keys, and I
assume as well for filesystems that get mounted ad-hoc.
It still doesn't work for the use case of a file system owned by me and
mounted automatically by fstab (as suggested in the description).

I wonder if the internal issue was that the vfs/gnome-screenshot was
checking for enough free space prior to saving? If so, I believe the
RAMFS doesn't report that. So, my workaround was to change that dir to
tmpfs:

Good call. I didn't do a proper cut and paste (again!), but I also do a

so that I can write to it, etc. The touch is a good test. I haven't
run it from the CLI, so I can't confirm that it's crashing, just that it
"doesn't work." Helpful, I know. :-)

properly for the exact setup (I do, but I have to remember to start
pulseaudio, currently), but that Rhythmbox dies. A program should /not/
just die; Rhythmbox should *gracefully* han

expected)
aplay does *not* work when pulseaudio is stopped (as expected) (***

@Sebastien, hmm, okay. From an "end-user point of view", all I know is
that Rhythmbox freezes. Good call in deducing *where* the problem is,
as I mentioned this on the Rhythmbox mailing lis

It seems to be. I haven't put 100% effort into drilling out how because
I'm used to just using the underlying command line utility (tar, zip,
etc.). In the mean time, I got lazy and went with the double-click on
email attachments, hence file-roller.

Okay, researching it more thoroughly now, I think the issue is that even
when I sort by location, file-roller wants to keep the directories
sorted together. This is incorrect, in my opinion. If I sort by
location, the entries should be sorted *by location*.
