I have run the gnome-settings-daemon in a terminal with --debug --no- daemon, but it only ever crashes during startup so I doubt it will help much. So, I have edited the command-line for the GNOME Settings Daemon in Startup Applications and added --debug there. Hopefully next time it fails to
