gnome-vfs has been deprecated and superseded by gio/gvfs since GNOME
2.22, hence mass-closing many of the gnome-vfs requests/bug reports.
This means that gnome-vfs is NOT actively maintained anymore, however
patches are still welcome.
If your reported issue is still valid for gio/gvfs, please

Well, I have Gutsy Release Candidate, and I was just able to open a text
document on a gnome-vfs SAMBA share, so I guess it's been fixed in
Gutsy. The only issue is that gedit prompted me to allow it to access my
keyring in order to connect to the SAMBA share (my GNOME keyring

Sergio, what underlying protocol were you using? In other words, what
type of gnome-vfs share was it? FTP, WebDAV, SSH/SFTP, Samba?

There's been a patch out for gnome-vfs recently (if you keep your system
up to date, you should already have it by now). Can anyone who has
installed this patch reproduce this issue? I can't anymore...

It would seem like a quick workaround for this would be to have some
sort of sanity check script that kills hanging process(es) left over
after a crash. At the very least bonobo-activation-server, since killing
it seems to resolve the issue.

Thanks for your response! I trust the non-free codecs packages have
been installed? In case you didn't know, due to copyright and patent
reasons, Ubuntu can't ship with any non-open multimedia codecs (software
you need to play media files). As such, you need extra packaged to be
able to playback
Your bug lacks information we would need to investigate further. For
example, what type of file are you trying to open (is it an MP3, WAV,
OGG, AVI, MPG)?
Are the files you're trying to open on a local disk, or are they on a
network share (for example on a Windows share, i.e. smb://...).

Just a note that I was able to confirm this bug on Ubuntu Edgy (6.10)

Funny, I have the same problem with Totem. Basically it won't play
anything from gnome-vfs. Here's exactly how the error message appears:
=
Totem could not play 'smb://HOME_NET;[EMAIL PROTECTED]/private/engage.mpeg'.
Could not read from resource.
=
Does this apply to Totem as well? I noticed that Totem has problems
opening files on SMB gnomevfs mounts. Perhaps this has something to do
with file locking (or something like that) which gnomevfs doesn't
implement properly?
