I've read the comments and would like to see an update for Gutsy, too.
But it's not a Synaptic bug.
And I believe the particular issue you are seeing won't be fixed with gimp
2.4.2.
But according to your bug
I've asked on #ubuntu-devel about whether we should provide the stable release
through -updates or -backports.
The consensus has been that there should be a list of high-impact (SRU-able)
bugs and only those should then get addressed.
Having a release candidate is not professional is apparently

No, unfortunately I cannot reproduce it. It might be related to bug
150471 IIRC.
From a quick search in Gnome's bug tracker and other nautilus bugs this
might be related to creating a lot of new files, e.g. when checking out
some source code repository, using pbuilder etc.
I'm not using nautilus
