A proper fix needs to come from protobuf itself, but the bug could also
be avoided if Mir or your app were willing and able to change protobuf

There is a workaround that fixed the problem for me. It was obviously
related to `python-paramiko`.
1. Remove the `python-paramiko` package instelled w/ apt:
`apt remove python-paramiko`
2. Install paramiko via pip that provides a newer obviously fixed
version:
`apt install duplicity python-pip
Just happened to me as well. "Just update the system" proved unexpectedly hard
since the "bad" update broke X and I couldn't log in using the GUI.
Had to switch to the plain terminal and update manually from there. After that
and a reboot, my system was working again.

It's a post-removal script in the old version which fails to run for
some reason. Might be a hardware issue. I can't reproduce the problem.
