this peculiar behavior. I've started using chromium as my main browser
and chromium doesn't act like firefox does in regards to the heavy

Very interesting fact:
I have two Canoscan LiDe 200 devices. One is showing the vertical bar on
my Ubuntu 16.04/ libsane(1.0.27+git20180103-xenial0) the other one not.
Both are working fine under Windows 7.
Is there anything I can do or test to get more information for you?

Nope, there is only one model with one chip one the market. The chip is
also identical to the CanoScan LiDE 100. (See Screenshot attached.)

you can try installing libgl1-mesa-dri and other pkgs it needs manually,
this is not an apt repo.

you can update packages on a live session just like on a normal install,
just logout/login and you should have a fresh session running on new
packages
lubuntu doesn't use unity, so it doesn't trigger this bug either, but
you should be able to install unity there

There was gnome-shell related crash file under /var/crash/, and since
usually I file error report after each crash there were .upload and
.uploaded files as well.
