We are using Autofs/NFSv4 mounted homes on mountpoint /homes on 25+ multi-user
client computers. We decided to use a separate mountpoint to be able to use
both NFS mounted and local homes.

Thanks a lot. You are absolutely right.
After removing the old stuff from /usr/local/lib und rebuilding
ld.so.cache there is no problem any longer. Xserver runs fine with
version: 2.34.2-0ubuntu2~20.04.1 now.

under /media/… unless its filename ends in '.pdf'.
Same file will be opened if it is copied to /home/… or renamed to a filename

Never mind that -- the problem continues, although turning off auto-mute
seems to have changed the character of the distortion, making it
slightly quieter, and it also made it unresponsive to the "rm -r
~/.pulse ~/.asound* ~/.pulse-cookie" command.
However, I discovered that the left channel is on
I disabled auto-mute mode and am finding it impossible to replicate the
distortion now. Will test further after a reboot and report back, but my
initial impression is that that solved the problem.

I get this behavior when I use a bridge or an ordinary wired ethernet

Same problem here (partly)!
I'm on a desktop with Samsung SyncMaster P2250 Monitor and on an older laptop
with fresh precise 12.04
installed.
The laptop is showing the picture as expected.
The desktop has the problem.
1) Only seen with eog. All of gimp, firefox, and shotwell show the
picture

The 'Cancel' Button has no effect.
Additionally on authentication failures the GUI is not restarting with the
prompt for the username, but continues to ask for a password in a endless loop.
So entering a wrong username will make lightdm unusable, as one can not correct
this.

intentional feature removal in upstream, and no bug entry exists there.

The issue I have is the generic emblems UI in nautilus missing. Re-
checking the history, I noticed that the OP changed this bug's
