I cannot reproduce this issue on my 11.10 laptop, however.

Got this issue today shortly after installing Precise Alpha 2 over my
11.10 partition on my Toshiba A505 S6960 laptop. The 11.10 partition was
upgraded from 11.04 and did not have the same problem.
The synclient TouchpadOff=0 workaround works for me too.

Just tonight, while chatting with two people in Empathy I noticed that
notifications for my own chat messages were building up in the messaging
menu and could not be cleared. Clicking Clear at the bottom of the menu
makes the envelope icon return to white, but all the entries
