All changes have pros and cons. Let's please make sure that changing
the default git remote name is not a net negative due to the effort it

As mentioned I am not opposed if others want to do the work.
All the work - because renaming things often has subtle unwanted effects.

Hi all,
I think it would be worthwhile to remove any potential problematic
language. I don't think Java has been identified as being problematic.
And I agree with Robert that it would be good to look inside the code as
well.

I see what you mean but I'm not sure if anyone is dominated by Git
master branches...that's my point ;-)
Let me just quote https://en.wikipedia.or

I don't think it's useful.
I know it is related to the "master/slave is a bad concept" discussion
but I fail to see how "master" by itself is a problem.

I found that page as well and tried it on one of my personal repos on
github. It works and was pretty easy.
The only not easily scripted thing for github is the selection of the
default branch. I'm not sure how the default branch could be changed for
Apache repos. Maybe it needs help from infra?

For the default branch we need infra.
PRs targeting master are automatically closed once master is removed, so we
first need to script retargeting all open PR towards the new 'main' branch
before deleting the old 'master'.

Will we need Infra support to change the default branch in Github?

Regardless of the members@ discussion, we should do this. Although perhaps
this should be done as a formal vote.
I'm assuming this is something that can be relatively easily scripted, but
if does require manual work, I'd be happy to help.

It seems that the members@ discussion is moving in this direction now as

Hi all,
What would others think about renaming the 'master' branches to 'main' in
Sling?
I know that there is discussion going on at members@ where people think
that 'master' on its own is not problematic, with suggestions to document
this somewhere. This could be an alternative.
