On today's SlashDot, we saw an hint

After getting a -huge- telephone bill from Telstra
(in Australia, where we -still- pay for local calls),
we thought to analyze the e-smith's logs to con-
firm that we had, in fact, made so many calls (or
otherwise)... since the line is exclusively e-smith's.
Unfortunately, we found the log files
Just before our recent experiments with remote SSH access.
we used the text-based e-smith manager (via telnet) to
-change- the seldom-changed range of IP addresses available
to the DHCP server for lease to LAN clients...
We reduced the number of IP adr's in the range, as well as
the endpoints...

Pine is an e-mail client resident on e-smith;
although able to -send- e-mail well enough,
pine hasn't shown any signs of ability to
receive a user's e-mail.
Pine's list of parameters contains one in
which to place the name of a smtp server
(the e-smith box's mail server is there),
but there does
Someone has suggested that PuTty's default config'n
works "out of the box" with e-smith...
I guess my question is where do we get a private key
(et al.) for authentication, if this is required?
Surely, there must be -something- sent from one
party to the communications to the other, if there

We just got a MASSIVE telephone bill
that suggests we've made (on average)
10 calls per day to our ISP (which, I
should tell you, hangs up every 4 hours).
Since we have e-smith configured (dur-
ing each of the 3 defined time-periods)
for "continuous" connection, ee expected

Now, with these settings:
Secure shell access - Private
admin CLI over ssh - yes
ssh using std pwords - no
telnet - Private

Using e-smith 4.1.1 on a farily modest Amd486 box
(120 MHz with 24 MB RAM & Realtek PCI NIC),
we've noticed some unexplaned disk activity, at times.
Today, after creating 2 new Users (on an otherwise
clean, newly installed 4.1.1 box, running - by admin
since 1 Mar or so), we had a look at active
