Question 2 of the evening: has anyone done any comparative user research yet on
different layouts for touchscreen keyboards on mobile phones? I'm just not
convinced that the metaphor translates for a QWERTY keyboard on a one-hand
device with no actual buttons. Will probably do said research
What's crazy is that all of us who have posted her have had put some
previous thought into this idea, but a true solution is yet to be
seen. I think a major drawback to a system like this is the variable
use of different web services, including social networks, blogs,...
An ultimate solution to
You might want to look into Elixir from Ilog, if you are doing Flex or
AIR development, it is a nice product and you can use your own maps
(ESRI shape files), depending on your goals you can display Google maps
in Flash.

I agree - I think that the 'high-contrast version' is actually MUCH harder
to read than the original version. Not only is 'black-on-white' thought to
be one of the optimum styles for reading (so, 'high-contrast' seems a
misnomer) but studies have shown that a variation of light
I'd like to build a social interaction design schema, probably as an
overlay to conventional wireframing for social media, but i'm not a
visual thinker. at all.
if anybody's interested, I'd like to channel some social interaction
design theory out of words and into a visual framework. I

I'm working on an Ajax app that will have edit-in-place forms (a.k.a. inline
editing). Page has read-only data; parts of the data are editable. User
chooses to edit a part; that part turns into an editable form. When user
saves changes, the form converts back to read-only data (this happens
Hi Gurmit,
If you're not already familiar with theories of cultural factors/dimensions
such as Hofstede or Hall, then my recommendation is to read up on them a bit
before reading specific advice on usability testing, since most of the
literature on the subject is based on them. Here are some good

I would encourage you to look at the work that Lynn Miller (and other
members of the Alias/Autodesk team) have done in this area. They have
articulated a good framework for bringing Agile methods and UX methods
together.
My quick google turned up this deck:
My guess is that a company like Agile with 1Password are in the best
position to implement this. I'm less certain about OpenID, which
whilst it feels like a great idea, just isn't really catching on
fast enough (maybe Google will help). You want a service to which all
your logins and passwords and
Of course - if I had an investor, I'd be developing it ;-)

I have seen cases where a space is allotted for where an error message
will go if it occurs. Designed well, users with no error never notice
that the space is there, it just integrates into the design. (I've
also seen this done poorly, of course where there's a big obvious
blank space.)
I've been considering the issue of Agile IxD for awhile now, and I
recently had a really great project experience integrating my design
process with an Agile XP team. Some quick takeaways:

I fail to use Yahoo Messenger and Yahoo Email simultaneously. The problem may
due to that I can chat via Yahoo Email as a simplified version of Yahoo
Messenger.
The scenario is as below:
I was chatting in Yahoo Messenger, which suddenly gave a reminder that Yahoo
Email received a new letter.
This may be because of the fact that when you login to Yahoo! Mail, you
also automatically login to the Messenger service included within Yahoo!
mail.
What you can do is login in again to your Yahoo! Messenger. Once you
login using your messenger, it will auto close your web messenger
