If it's any use I was in the same position a couple of weeks ago and

Watching the cpu usage I get regular small spikes of about 45% (20%
slim.exe, 12% slimserver.exe, 8% other) and then every couple of minute
slim.exe goes to 97% causing a short freeze. Very strange.

particularly the RSS - I haven't used it for a long time but I remember

I upgraded the server software from 5.0.4 under Linux to 6.0.2 under
MacOSX (Tiger). The server claims that I have to upgrade the
Squeezebox' firmware. When I want to upgrade the firmware on the
Squeezebox though, the server crashes and the player Squeezebox (old
one) is not updated.

"compatibility pack" which includes a SlimServer plugin and a special
firmware update. There's no reason anyone should have to pay for stuff
they don't need if everything is nice and modular.

5.0.4 is fairly old. Perhaps try installing 5.4.1 just to upgrade firmware,
then install 6.0. The change from 5.4.1 to 6.0.x should not require a firmware
change on squeezebox, but there are a lot of versions skipped when going from
5.0.4 to 6.0.2.

I am kind of caught between a rock and a hard place. I'd like to wait
for Slim to support PlayForSure...and I can still use the old version
of Rhapsody. But I really want the to-go...I want to try out new music
when I am out walking and in my car. If I upgrade Rhapsody I can no
longer use Slim.
