Now that I've figured out how to use it the issue of the default names
is trivial. The fact that one couldn't build playlists "on the fly"
from the listening chair was my only complaint about the Squeezebox.
This plugin answers all my prayers.

I am unable to decode m4a files on my server 2003 setup. If I convert to
flac they work finbe, but then I have to maintain two copies of my
entire library. ANy suggestions to use my existing m4a files?

A few days ago I noticed that I could put "rescan library" as a main
menu item on my Squeezebox. This is particularly handy when I've

all he sees in Server Settings -> File Types for apple formats is AIFF,
FLAC, and MP3.
So maybe the info he's looking for is this: AIFF is a basic PCM

There is a problem with 6.3.0 IMHO.
If you specify a path for the 'audiodir' setting in the server
settings, it is being replaced by the real pathname.
In my setup, I have a symlink from '//music/m' to the real path, say

Yes. That is correct. It just stops.
I ran --d_http_async and
The files are simple text, so easily editted. The only caveat is that
they are specifically unix-style line endings. Avoid using notepad,
but wordpad should be ok on windows. Any text editor should be fine
with OSX or Linux.

system lots of info had appeared in the DOS box. So, it seems that the
rescan function just needs a lot of time to complete. In the proces

I now see the nightly Windows build there. I have downloaded it and
installed. Attempting to launch SlimServer via a command prompt with
slim.exe --noupnp still does not launch SlimServer and still gives the

Because if you try to lookup invalid.domain.com using the system
library, you'll block the entire SlimServer for many seconds. What we
do now is:
localhost => 127.0.0.1
single-word domain => use system library for lookup, it's probably in a
hosts file or LAN DNS server, so lookup should be fast.
Can't offer you a simple configuration option for this. However if you
are happy to edit the perl, you could edit Plugins/Visualizer.pm
And change "showtext => 1" to "showtext => 0" at approximately line 55.

This may be out of context, but why isn't the code using the system
default host resolution paths? Most applications should be able to use
the system paths (I know linux uses nsswitch.conf for example) so that
you can fall back on whats known to work? If files don't have it, then
go to dns, etc..

1. Genre contains "pop" [stops classical and ambient etc]
2. Yr is in the range 1980-1989 [limits to decade]
3. Rating does not = 0 [weeds out rubbish]
4. Kind contains MPEG [limits to mp3 not videos etc]
Result = 80s pop fest!

Here's what I use (though I rarely play m4a or aac files), but it does
work for me. You will need to have mplayer installed for it to work,
though. Put these lines in your "slimserver-convert.conf" file:

On booting, Slimserver was running nicely in they tray until something
tried to connect to it which caused the "lights" to go out.
I finally sorted it last night (after several trial and error attempts)
by uninstalling IE7, my firewall and Slimserver and then re-installing
in the same order.

Also remember that slimserver allows the possibility of multiple values
in tags, with the separator as specified under Server settings >
Behavior. You could create genres for 1960s, 1970s, etc. and random
play within genres. For example, if the separator is a semi-colon, you
could have "Punk; 1970
I've run into this problem resently as well when starting squeezeslave
from the init scripts.
Turns out, in my case anyway, that the read keypress loop "spins", due
to not having a "true" pty to read from.
Try redirecting stdin and stdout to an unused pty.
I've also redirected stderr to the pty

the same year, say 1980. A bit long winded but would provide the

I installed the beta on Ubuntu tonight and it was very easy.
1) added "deb http://debian.slimdevices.com stable main" to my
/etc/atp/sources.list file
