the player off does work, but when it is turned back on it
causes all the players in the sync group to Pause and wait for the newb
to catch up.

controls (Squeeze Commander) or SqueezePlay
mouse click on the || to Pause, hoping it will stop. I don't think
either of those play well with long clicks (press hold).

What is the easiest way to access it?
When I press pause on my server, or on my SB remote, what actually
occurs? Is it buffering? How much time needs to elapse between it
trying to buffer, and it skipping the buffering and muting or stopping
the stream?

sells it like a free demo, or like your first joint free.
VMware *gives* away their VMware player and their VMware server and
they do that to get you to buy their more sophisticated products. Lots
of others have figured that out too.
