I'd think the desktop edition would be fine. although you're after a "server", you'll only have a couple of clients. "server" operating systems are for data centre's and so on. You can set up file shares and even quotas and so on with ubuntu desktop edition just fine. I doubt you'll need any more

That's a how long is a piece of string question really. The 3700 would be an ideal server. Putting windows on it would be very easy. Putting ubuntu on it would also be pretty easy - the installer approaches windows in it's ease of use and simplicity. Where you could get unstuck is if you have pr

I've set up my system with a Revo 3600 running Ubuntu. Installed Squeezebox server and also webmin to handle basic admin tasks remotely. The bonus of this system seems to be that I can put the Revo box to sleep when inactive, and the Squeezebox units can wake it whenever i want them to play music

even with the revo? can xbmc on win 7 offload video processing to the GPU, think this was the issue i read. I have no doubt that a win 7 machine with lots of cpu power and mem would cope but unless xbmc on win 7 on the revo can offload the processing power to the gpu you wont be playing 1080 --

I just bought the 3600, 1GB RAM (£140 from ebuyer), comes with rubbish o/s so got rid of that, whacked ubuntu 9.10 on it, put SBS on it, put XMBC on it and connected to tv via HDMI, handles full 1080 hd video too, not worried about WOL as its pretty much my home server now so stays on 24*7. firs
