The E is for Edition.
Does linux or Mac have a media center option?
You'd think that an X windows based solution would be much more
flexible. You could
SageTV is available for Linux in an OEM version and is currently in beta
for Mac OS.

I've been running it for over a year under Windows as my primary TV
tuner interface and PVR (two tuners dumping onto 800GB of HD in a nice
media enclosure).

I don't know. ;) I run Slimserver on a PowerMac G4 with Mac OS 10.4.8

I have started to run SlimRemote on my HTPC, works well but the pc text
output on a 720 x 576 CRT screen is very bad and pretty well
unreadable. Will be a lot better on a 1080p 102cm LCD when I can afford
one.
I use a Shintaro wireless keyboard to control the HTPC.

I've got a HP Compaq slimline business desktop that functions very
nicely. Very quiet, hooked up to my LCD telly with a 5m VGA cable so
the PC is actually inside my hifi cabinet.
Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse for when I need to use them,
otherwise I control it via VNC from my laptop.
What gusi is looking for (and also me) is the possibility to have a
webbrowser/interface/plugin INTO the mediacenter interface. So that you
can control a Squeezebox with the romote controller of the Media Center
PC connected to a plasma screen and that you can select music, artists,
genres,
Does media center come with it's own remote? Does it use a TV and a
normal PC monitor? I might have to visit a shop and see how it
works.
I know how to drive VNC but once I use a laptop I may as well point its
browser straight at my SS.

My mistake, I'd assumed you'd have already seen topics such as this one
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=29789highlight=mce
posted yesterday which discusses whether you can control SS via MCE.
MCE is just Windows XP but with a full-screen application optimised for
viewing on a TV

You'd think that an X windows based solution would be much more
flexible. You could then display controlling apps on remote X window
managers such as a linux pda or phone.
