you send us the output of :
emerge -p xorg-server mesa
In the meantime, you can try recompiling those two things :
emerge mesa emerge xorg-server
BTW gentoo support is at https://bugs.gentoo.org/ :)

I have TCL enabled now.
Sounds close enough to what I'm running here, stable too, and I had frequent
lockups before (6.8.2). I had noticed the lockups would occur less frequently
without TCL. Now it's perfectly stable with or without TCL.

You _have_ to replace your kernel modules with the newer ones (make linux-core)
otherwise the lock is still here. I think you also have to replace your Xorg
because 6.8.2 won't take the newer DRI drivers.

Dunno if that helps, but I can reproduce the black glxgears problem
quite easily here with 2.6.11.10, drm cvs from saturday, dri cvs from
saturday (linux-dri target), and xorg 6.8.99.15. Everything built fine.
My R200 is a FireGL 8800.

As of today, after installing yesterday's binary snapshot
from fd.o instead of CVS, I'm happy to report the bug is gone.
Actually, I thought I had updated everything that needed
to be, but I had forgotten to copy the 2D (ati_drv.o, radeon.o)
driver when I updated the dri (r200_dri.so) driver.
Hello,
After realizing that the R200 driver bundled with xorg 6.8 wasn't
stable, I installed the CVS of DRI (as of 2 hours ago).
The problem *was* :

be in-kernel, and not dri-related.
